Scarritt Point was named for Nathan Scarritt (1821-1890) a Methodist minister who taught the Indians for many years. He owned a large amount of property in the northeast area, moving his family there in 1862 from the city of Westport to get away from the troubles caused by the Civil War. His home was located at what is today called Scarritt Point. He and his wife had nine children and gave property to them for homes in the northeast area; some of the homes are still there.
