  1. Four Walk/Run Events Affect Weekend Traffic on May 17-19

    The City of Kansas City, Mo., is notifying motorists that four separate walks and races will result in several temporary road closures on May 17, 18 and 19.

    On Friday, May 17, the Rave Run 5K will begin on Arena Drive at Kemper Arena. Rolling road closures will take place from 8:30 to 10 p.m. on the following race route: Arena Drive west to American Royal Drive; south on American Royal Drive; east on 23rd Street/Avenida Cesar E. Chavez; and south on Allen Avenue, which turns into 25th Street. Once the race reaches Southwest Boulevard, runners will turn around and repeat the route in reverse, concluding on the east side of Kemper Arena.

    Two events are scheduled for Saturday, May 18. The largest is the Heart Walk, which includes 8,000 walkers and takes place in the Country Club Plaza area. Rolling road closures will take place from approximately 8 a.m. to noon on the following race route: Theis Park to Oak Street; north on Oak Street, east on 45th Street, south on Rockhill Road, west along the Brush Creek path, north on Jefferson Street, and east on 47th Street to finish back at Theis Park.

    Also on Saturday, the Restoration Run will limit traffic on Hickman Mills Drive between 103rd Street and Marion Park Drive from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

    On Sunday, May 19, the Kansas City Triathlon will be held at Longview Lake. Rolling road closures will take place from 7 to 11:30 a.m. on the following race route: Begin at Longview Lake’s parking lot and head west on Pittenger Road; north on Raytown Road; east on 109th Street; make a U-turn at the intersection of 109th Street and View High Drive and continue west on 109th Street; north on Raytown Road; make a U-turn at the intersection of Raytown Road and the I-470 on/off ramps and continue south on Raytown Road; east on High Grove Road; make a U-turn at the intersection of High Grove Road and Southeast Raytown Road and continue west on High Grove Road; north on Raytown Road; and east on Pittenger Road to return to the parking lot of Longview Lake.

    Please observe caution and obey all posted detours and barricades.

  2. Memorial Day at Union Cemetery

    Union Cemetery 150Please join the Union Cemetery Historical Society and KC Parks on Monday, May 27, for an old-fashioned Memorial Day service.  The thirty-minute ceremony will be held at the flagpole in the middle of Union Cemetery, Kansas City’s oldest public cemetery, at 11:30am.  Participants in this tribute to those who have served our country include local Cub and Boy Scouts, re-enactor groups, local politicians and others.  A cookies and lemonade reception will follow the ceremony, hosted by the Civil War Roundtable of Western Missouri.

  3. Street Closures Scheduled for Music Festival and Race

    The City of Kansas City, Mo., is notifying motorists that one music festival and one race will affect traffic this week and weekend.

    Rockfest, a music festival, will close a number of streets around Penn Valley Park:

    – Kessler Road between Pershing Road and Main Street (May 7-14, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.)

    – 29th Street between Penn Valley Drive and Wyandotte Street (May 7-14, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.)

    – Main Street between Pershing Road and 27th Street (May 11 at 4 a.m. through May 12 at 1 a.m.)

    – Wyandotte Street between Memorial Drive and 31st Street (May 11 at 4 a.m. through May 12 at 1 a.m.)

    On Saturday, May 11, the Run Mom Run will begin at 9 a.m. at Visitation School, 5134 Baltimore Ave. The race will close Main Street between 51st and 52nd streets from 7-10:30 a.m., with rolling closures scheduled for the rest of the race route from 9-10:30 a.m.

    Runners will head south on Main Street from 51st Street to 58th Terrace; west on 58th Terrace; south on Wyandotte Street; west on Huntington Road; and north on Summit Street. Summit Street curves east turning into 52nd Street and continues onto 51st Street and south to Main Street to conclude the race at Visitation School.

  4. KC Parks Invites Public Input at Community Forums

    All Community Centers to Host Forums May 7-9

    The Community Services Division of Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation invites residents to participate in Public Forums next week at KC Parks community centers.

    The purpose of these open meetings is to obtain information to assist with improving service and program delivery of the Community Services Division which oversees community centers, athletics and aquatics programing in Kansas City, Missouri.

    PUBLIC FORUM SCHEDULE

    Tuesday, May 7
    6 p.m.: Gregg Klice Community Center, 1600 John “Buck” O’Neil Way
    6 p.m.: Tony Aguirre Community Center, 2050 W. Pennway
    7 p.m.: Garrison Community Center, 1124 East 5th St.

    Wednesday, May 8
    6:30 p.m.: Westport-Roanoke Community Center, 3601 Roanoke Rd.
    7 p.m.: Southeast Community Center, 4201 E 63rd St.
    7 p.m.: Marlborough Community Center, 4201 E 63rd St. (held at Southeast CC)
    7 p.m.: Hillcrest Community Center, 10401 Hillcrest Rd.

    Thursday, May 9
    7 p.m.: KC North Community Center, 3930 N Antioch Rd.
    7 p.m.: Brush Creek Community Center, 3801 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd.
    7 p.m. Line Creek Community Center, 5940 NW Waukomis Dr.

    Each forum is anticipated to last 1.5 hours and will be conducted by Pros Consulting, a management consulting and planning firm specializing in government and not-for-profit agencies.

  5. Two Races Will Affect Morning Traffic this Weekend

    The City of Kansas City, Mo., is notifying motorists that two separate races will affect traffic on the mornings of Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5.

    On Saturday, May 4, the Kansas City Corporate Challenge 5K will begin at 7:30 a.m. at 9400 Ward Parkway. The race will close Ward Parkway between Wornall Road and 83rd Street from 7-9 a.m. For more information about this closure, please contact Katie Baergen at 913-826-2957.

    On Sunday, May 5, the Lawyer’s Association of Kansas City’s Run for Justice 5K will begin at 8 a.m. at Theis Park.
